Teaching Philosophy
In my composition, literature, creative, and technical
writing classes, I want students to discover the aesthetic possibilities of
language to communicate, to evoke emotions, and to inspire social and
personal change. When students leave my class, I would like them to
perceive themselves as writers, trust their subjective response to the
world, and be able to articulate that response creatively and clearly.
Along with developing students' sense of confidence as writers, I'd like my
students to take responsibility for their writing. I hope they leave my
classroom knowing that writing belongs to them. Finally, my sense of being
a writing teacher is closely connected to my being a writer. I feel
equipped to help others find their process and reach the desired piece of
writing.
